On Thursday 25 April, the Study Environment Council opens its doors to the annual study environment day at Campus Aalborg. The theme this year is community in your student life.

The study environment day has now been held. This page will shortly be updated with a description of how the day went.

Community in focus

At AAU, we have an ambition that you and your fellow students have the opportunity to participate in academic and social communities that help strengthen your well-being and commitment to your student life. But good communities don't come by themselves. It requires both courage to commit and strength to maintain good cooperation and interaction. You are thus helping to create the good study environment at AAU.

- And that's why the Study Environment Day 2024 puts the spotlight on community and collaboration in your student life!

What's on the program?

Through the introductory presentation, you will learn more about the topic. Here we will discuss the unique benefits and opportunities of the community – and what significance it can have for you as a student. However, it will also be a talk about possible stereotypical and unrealistic expectations of the community.

After the presentation, you can immerse yourself in the workshop whose topic you are most interested in.
Depending on which workshop you choose, you can either help develop ideas and give your input on how we create good communities at AAU, or you can become more informed about what you can do to be part of and contribute to communities. You must choose a workshop in connection with your registration.

The formal programme concludes with a panel discussion. The panel will consist of students, teachers and other experts. During the day, you can submit questions and vote on other students' questions, which the debate will then be based on.

What do I get out of the day?

The purpose is that you leave the day with new knowledge and inspiration on top of a good deal of fun when the day ends with the fact that you can challenge your known or new fellow students in various board games. 

During the day there is free coffee/tea, cake, pizza and snacks!

The event is held at Create, Rendsburggade 14, 9000 Aalborg from 14.30 to 20.30.  

Choice of workshop

There are limited spots, so it is important that you register for the Study Environment Day. When you register, you must also choose which of the following workshops you want to participate in:

Workshop 1. Communities, groups and friendships: What do each of us need when creating a community?

In this workshop, you will be introduced to a range of approaches to navigating social student life. Among other things, you will gain knowledge about different needs in entering communities and personal tools to do so in different ways.

The workshop will also look at the shared contribution to the community: what structural, cultural and relational approaches are needed to develop good communities and how we can all make it easier to become part of a community.

The workshop is held in Danish.

Workshop 2. Set the stage for great collaboration - you win when everyone wins

Responsibility for your own learning, you've heard that one, right? But what about responsibility for the others in the group, for the project and for the collaboration and thus the community? How do you handle it? Based on concrete advice from experienced students and alumni, you will get some tools to set the stage for a good and rewarding collaboration, align expectations and, not least, address the difficult conversations about lack of quality in project work to prevent disagreements from turning into conflicts.

If the rules of the game for cooperation in the project group, the class cohort and the study programme are clear, you're much more likely to learn more. If you can play well with each other, everyone in the group wins - and who doesn't want that?

The workshop is held in Danish.

Workshop 3. Cross-cultural collaboration – How to work in diverse teams

Have you ever been part of a team where cultural differences have given rise to miscommunication and misunderstandings? Have you ever been frustrated with your culturally diverse team because they do not contribute or simply do not seem to listen to you?

In this workshop, you will gain insight into the general cultural differences that play a role in cross-cultural collaboration. You will learn to understand your own cultural baggage, how to switch off your own cultural “lenses”, and you will get the tools that you and your team require to improve your cross-cultural teamwork.

Registration closed on April 18. However, should you wish to participate in a possible cancellation, you can write to Iben Skov Bertelsen at ib@adm.aau.dk and ask if there is a spot for you.

Every year, the Student Environment Council invites you to a Study Environment Day, where all students at AAU can join in an inspiring day in the spirit of the good study environment. A Study Environment Day is held on Campus Aalborg and Campus Copenhagen. Students from Campus Esbjerg are invited to the Study Environment Day in Aalborg.
