About Angelika Benešová
When Angelika first arrived in Denmark, she did not understand how important it is to have a LinkedIn profile. Back in her home country, she explains, LinkedIn is not used widely as a job-search tool, but she quickly learned that she must adapt to the local market in order to get better chances of getting a job.
The initial steps in shaping your profile are selecting a good professional photo and filling out all of the general information. Additionally, this is an opportunity to experiment with your own unique style and tone of voice while creating your posts. For example, when presenting your educational background, consider mentioning specific classes, project names and companies you collaborated with. That will provide your potential employers with insights into your acquired knowledge along your journey, making LinkedIn a powerful platform for showcasing your professional identity, says Angelika.
She successfully uses LinkedIn to secure herself numerous jobs and internship offers and emphasises the importance of creating her own personal brand. One of the things that framed her brand was the certain choice of colours and fonts, which she then constantly applied to her graphics and portfolio.
Her strategy also goes beyond aesthetics – she frequently uses hashtags and location tags in her posts. As she explains, hashtags play a crucial role when it comes to targeting posts for specific audience. Apart from that, using location tags can significantly expand the reach of one’s content.
Another important aspect for her networking on LinkedIn. The importance of expanding your network with relevant individuals will increase your own visibility in their circle, and that can play a vital role in the long run. Angelika shares a practical advice to networking:
Adding such a note would enable others to remember you more clearly, especially if they met a lot of people at a such event. Moreover, that initiative gives better connections and shows the human aspect of professional networking on the platform.
Exploring the job market on LinkedIn consist of a lot bumps on the way. Angelika admits that she experienced a lot of rejections along the way, and sometimes even the “radio silence” from different companies. However, she persisted and frequently applied to jobs she liked, even though her motivation was getting low.
During her bachelor's degree, also in Denmark, she got lucky and finally got a response from an open position she applied to through LinkedIn. After submitting her well-crafted CV and cover letter, she successfully navigated through 2 rounds of interviews and got a part-time job. She points out that her proficiency in Slovak, her mother language, as well as Czech, proved to be a great advantage as the company was ready to expand to those markets.
As graduation approached, she felt the need for a brief escape and visited London with her friend. It was during the trip that a potential employer, intrigued by her LinkedIn profile, reached out. The initial communication was on Danish, a language not purely in her comfort zone, but despite that she tackled the challenge. She asked for help from her friend and arranged a coffee meeting with the company. Another successful interview resulted in a full-time job opportunity, which she took even before she officially graduated.
It is worth mentioning that while she was in the waiting process for that full-time job, Angelika got 2 additional interview invitations in her inbox. It is surely a reminder that sometimes chances can come at a specific timing, but it is definitely worth the wait and work you put in!
Find your own personal voice on LinkedIn and use it to stand out!
Consider creating your profile in Danish, as it might make you more visible to the larger audience in your area.
You don’t have to post daily – but post what is relevant and important for you and your network.
Remember to post at appropriate working hours (approx. at 8 - 17), as that will allow you to reach your audience in the best way!
Sometimes patience is the key – so don’t give up!
