3 things Lavinia learned from LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn’s e-course about using LinkedIn as a student is free and very helpful for you if you want to explore LinkedIn and its many opportunities. Lavinia has tried it herself, and here she shares some of the things she has learned from it.

"As a student, you may have the tendency to think that LinkedIn is a platform dedicated to professionals who have a career already. But let me tell something else: this is far from the truth – LinkedIn is a great tool for students no matter their experience," Lavinia says. "Using it effectively can help you land a student job, internship or even your dream job after graduation."

The e-course gives you a 360-degree overview of the power of LinkedIn and why you should use it, how to set up your profile and strengthen it, and how to build your LinkedIn network.

Here are some tips for using LinkedIn as a student, based on Lavinia's experience with the e-course:

  1. 1

    Build a strong profile

"Creating a LinkedIn profile is not enough – to be noticed, you need to create a strong profile. You should include a professional photo, a headline and summary that describes your situation, skills and interest.

Another important thing to do is use the right keywords that people might be looking for on LinkedIn. Using the right keywords, can help you be noticed by recruiters and other people wanting to connect with you."

  2. 2

    Build your LinkedIn network

"Once you set up your profile, connect with people, expand, and learn about new opportunities. A strong professional network can provide great insight, advice, knowledge and open the doors for job opportunities.

When sending out a request, it is great advice to personalize the message by expressing your interest in their work or mentioning something you have in common.

Moreover, the LinkedIn Alumni tool is a great way to find people and career possibilities from people who attended the same university as you."

  3. 3

Use LinkedIn on a day-to-day basis

"By connecting with people, joining groups, and following companies, your LinkedIn feed becomes populated, and you can be up to date with news. This gives you the opportunity to see potential job offers, and events or courses that you might be interested in.

Besides finding jobs and internships, LinkedIn gives you the opportunity to share content. This can provide value to your network, catch attention, and strengthen your digital footprint or personal brand."
