Published online: 22.02.2024

In my search for a student job, I had collected a list of companies that I heard valuable feedback about and that sparked a positive impression. I was aware I needed to work hard to get where I wanted, but I did not know that patience and good timing are the key. In this article, I will share my story of applying to Trackunit 3 times, facing rejection, and landing a position that has become more fulfilling than I ever could have imagined.

The journey of “ups and downs”

Sometimes the path to the right job takes a long time and it might come with certain challenges. During my studies and my gap year, I have applied Trackunit 3 times and unfortunately faced rejections. It was not that I lacked passion – it was all about the timing. I wanted to be a part of the company, therefore I applied unsolicited, and for full-time and part-time positions.

But my CV was not strong enough compared to other candidates, as I needed to get more experience. I got that with the help of internship, volunteering and applying for a master’s degree.

I did not want to be discouraged, so I patiently waited for the opportunity to present itself.

While awaiting the right moment, I took the initiative to understand the company’s working culture. Having friends in my network who were part of the Trackunit team provided valuable insights. It was not just about the work; it was the perfect blend of professionalism and a relaxed atmosphere that appealed to me. The inclusion of table football sessions, social events, and Friday bars showcased a workplace that valued not only productivity but also the well-being and happiness of its employees.

Timing is everything

With the start of my master’s degree, I was fortunate enough to gain a student job at AAU Career, which was a perfect kick-start to my new career path in events and marketing. One month after, a friend from my network reached out, saying that there is a fitting position at Trackunit, and that I should consider applying even though I already have one job. After a successful coffee date, I got offered a student position at the company and I knew I had to take that chance.

The key lesson I learned from my journey to Trackunit is that timing is everything.

Saying yes to opportunities, even if they seem challenging and stressful, can lead to unexpected rewards. I embraced the challenges and trusted the process, and eventually, I got a chance to work in a company that was on my wish list.

Exploring Danish unique working culture

Upon entering the Trackunit team, I discovered a workplace that goes beyond the conventional. Yes, there is a lot of work to be done, but there is also room for leisure and bonding. The team's commitment to each other and a culture of mutual support stood out. Open communication, constructive feedback, and a healthy work-life balance are not just buzzwords here; they are integral to the Danish working culture.

What struck me the most was that my colleagues value my opinion from day one. Even as a student worker, I bring responsibility to the team, and we rely on each other. I can always come up with suggestions and new ideas as we all are working towards the same goals.

View setbacks as opportunities for growth

My journey taught me valuable lessons that I would like to share with you:

  1. 1

    Take risks and be patient

First and foremost, take risks and always be determined if you really want that certain position or a part in the company. Do not be discouraged by initial setbacks – instead, view them as opportunities for growth. Timing is crucial, and sometimes, waiting for the right moment can make all the difference.

  2. 2

Gain experience and build a strong CV

Actively engage in activities outside your academic experience to build a strong CV. Volunteering, personal projects, and internships can set you apart and make you a more attractive candidate when the right job opportunity arises. If you have extra time on your hands, use them on language courses or programs that might be relevant for your next position.

  3. 3

    Work on your network

In the end, expanding and nourishing your network might just open the doors to your next professional experience. Share with your network that you are looking for jobs, and even more, share if you really like the workplace they are hired at. Show authenticity and enthusiasm, as they might remember you and help you turn your dream job into a reality. So, do not give up – your perfect opportunity might be just around the corner.
