Gaining experience by collaborating with a Danish company

Collaborating with a company during your studies can provide invaluable experience and insight into real-world challenges. For Chuddy, his project collaboration with Space Inventor has been a significant part of his development.

About Chukwudi “Chuddy” Ezievuo

Nationality: Nigerian

Age: 27 years old

Education: Mechanical Engineering at AAU in Aalborg

Semester: 10th semester

Collaboration partner: Space Inventor

Finding the right collaboration partner

Chuddy's collaboration began when his department at Aalborg University provided a list of company project proposals for students.

"I was initially considering several companies, but when I saw a project related to space technology, I was immediately interested," he explains. His fascination with space stemmed from childhood, making Space Inventor an exciting choice.

He reached out to the company, discussed their expectations, and aligned his thesis with their needs:

The company was welcoming and open to discussions, which made the collaboration process smooth.

Working on real engineering challenges

At Space Inventor, Chuddy focused on optimising a reaction wheel bearing—a critical component in satellite systems. "The component works, but in engineering, there’s always room for improvement," he says. His task involved analysing the bearing system, considering the effects of vibrations, and seeking ways to enhance its performance.

His work builds upon research started in the previous semester and continues as part of his thesis.

Chuddy’s collaboration with Space Inventor has not only enhanced his technical knowledge but also helped him grow professionally:

This experience has taught me so much beyond just engineering – it’s about teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.

Applying skills from university

Chuddy credits Aalborg University’s Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach and his participation in Young Professionals in Denmark (YPD) for helping him succeed in the collaboration.

Before coming to Denmark, I wasn’t very outspoken or confident in presenting my ideas. PBL pushed me to develop my communication skills, which proved essential when discussing projects with the company.

The YPD programme also played a role in preparing him for professional interactions:

"One of the biggest takeaways was learning how to present my competencies. When speaking with a company, it's important to highlight what you can do, even if you don’t meet every requirement.”

“Instead of saying, ‘I don’t have experience in this,’ I learned to say, ‘I haven’t done this before, but I am willing to learn, and I have experience in related areas.’ That shift in mindset made a big difference."
