When Luna Azul Cantillo did her internship in a start-up, she was very proactive which resulted in many new opportunities and responsibilities. Here, she shares her experiences regarding getting an internship and getting as much as possible out of it – as well as what she learned during her internship.

About Luna Azul Cantillo

  • Nationality: Czech Republic
  • Study programme: Entrepreneurial Engineering at AAU in Aalborg
  • Semester: 9th
  • Job: Intern at ATLANT 3D Nanosystems

How I got my internship

Once I started the application process for my internship, my profile was irrelevant to some companies.

This shouldn’t discourage you of keeping trying, in case it happens to you as well.

The key to getting my great internship experience was targeting companies related to my specific profile. My entrepreneurial studies together with my nanotechnology background and the good understanding of 3D printing gave me an advantage even over some PhD applicants because fitting to the unique needs of ATLANT 3D Nanosystems.

Moreover, I was willing to move from Aalborg to Copenhagen, where this start-up was located, which was the evidence of the high commitment in the eyes of the CEO.

Being proactive and open-minded accelerated my responsibilities and learning

Since the very first day of my internship, I have been very proactive in order to be as helpful as possible. This attitude opened a lot of doors. I was offered to be the only representative not only at local events, such as in Tech BBQ, but also at international events once in Spain, Germany and Sweden.

In my job, I implemented the academic knowledge, the common sense and my personal competences. However, I discovered my strong side to be the ability to learn as I go. Even though, my main task was to create a business plan, but also always ready to help in any area of the business.

The flexibility and eagerness to learn facilitated me to go to a number of exciting lectures for start-ups and inspiring meetings with star-up mentors and investors.

Very soon I got also accountable for a Danish Tech Challenge accelerator program requirement. Welcoming this responsibility brought me an immense amount of learning. In particular, I received more awareness about the individual approach when delegating tasks and the creation of a sense of urgency.

Moreover, I realised how to handle deadlines which are not dependent on my work only or how to prioritise tasks for both execution and delegation.

How to get the maximum out of an internship

To sum it up, getting the most of your internship reflects on your curiosity, openness to all kinds of tasks, self-education, responsibility-taking and proactivity. Identify your strong side and implement it, when possible. The more you will strive for self-development and optimization of the company; the more you can use in your future.

I believe that especially a start-up environment gives a student the true freedom for professional growth, the agility in change and optimise processes and the ability to get to know well the co-workers and create good relations.

I can strongly recommend applying for the positions fitting to your unique profile in the start-up setting. I am full of hope you will fit in a team from the social and professional point of view and receive an employment proposition, as I got.
