When Alexa was searching for an internship, she found that creating a targeted CV made her stand out from the crowd. And when she started her internship, she got more than she had ever hope for: Challenges, responsibilities, insights, a smooth learning curve, and even a student job! Here, she shares her experiences and tips for landing an internship and student job.

About Alexa Hartaganu-Chincisan

  • Age: 24 years old
  • Nationality: Romanian
  • Study programme: Culture, Communication and Globalization at AAU in Aalborg
  • Semester: 9th
  • Job: Project Assistant at NTU International

The targeted CV - the key to a remarkable job application

For her 9th semester, Alexa was looking for an internship. She had heard about NTU International and dreamt of doing a project collaboration with them. When she got the chance to apply for an internship, she didn’t hesitate.

She specifically tailored her CV for this opportunity, and she created a detailed cover letter that would emphasise on her achievements and skills. And resonated with the company – a few months later, she started her internship with them.

Creating a targeted CV for a job is something she highly recommends: “Although it is a tedious process, targeting your CV can boost your chances of having a remarkable application.”

She always encourages fellow students to not fear exploring different opportunities.

Whether it comes to a new job role, a new company within a new field, or a new chance… I would say: Take it! There is so much more potential hiding behind your comfort zone.

"Apply for it, somebody else will for sure, you have nothing to lose."

Alexa learned more than expected in her internship

“When it comes to my internship, I decided to challenge myself and start working in something new to me – project management. Needless to say, I expected to have a rough start, however, my internship workplace has made my journey much more insightful and simpler than I ever expected. I had a smooth learning curve, with constant progress and added responsibilities that made me feel secure as an intern and professional.“

During her internship, Alexa learned much more about herself than she initially thought.

I realised I am capable of taking multiple responsibilities to help out my team; I noticed I have perfected some of the skills I knew I was good at, but never had the chance to prove; and I learnt that hard work pays off. It really, really does!

Actually, it paid off so well that she got a student job at the company after the internship ended.

All experiences are valuable - as well as your personality

She emphasises that any type of experience can enhance your CV if you know how to promote your values correctly.

“Before having an ‘office job’, I worked in a small bistro and learnt many things that later on helped me in my career. From student jobs like these, you can perfect e.g. your multi-tasking skills, evaluate your team spirit and your leadership skills, or develop your network. “

Alexa thinks that when it comes to a company ‘keeping’ you in a later stage, e.g. in a student job, it does not only depend on how much you work and how good your skills are, but also on how compatible your personality is with the team.

It all starts with you

“I always dreamt of working with something that helps people, communities, or the World in one way or another and it makes me happy to know that now, I can work closely to Education and Development projects from all around the globe, driving small communities into sustainable change.“

“My education at AAU has clearly helped me envision my career in a positive way; particularly because it tied my skills and made me discover what my true professional strengths are.”

I believe, like majority of the things in life: ‘It all starts with YOU’, which means, finding your authentic self is a step you should not be postponing.
