Winners of the AAU Startup Grant 2022

Fireobs

Fireobs consists of Jenisten Antony and Daniel Doroshenko, who study Business Economics (HA) and Robotics at AAU, and Lathes Linganathan, who studies Product Development and Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark. Fireobs has developed a fire alarm that can detect forest fires in their earliest stages much faster than the methods typically used today. Their fire detector is based on a technology that does not use any kind of batteries and therefore does not pose any burden on the environment.

What challenge or problem are you trying to solve with your idea/startup?

"At Fireobs, we have developed a solution that can reduce damage and climate impact associated with wildfires. Our system, which consists of modules in a network, can be set up in natural areas where there is a risk of fire. If a fire occurs, the modules in the forest floor, powered by the energy from the fire, will send real-time data to the emergency services about the location, speed and direction of the fire. Our solution has been developed in collaboration with Danish emergency services, but our vision is to develop a system that can be used globally. We have just started a collaboration with the emergency services in Hawaii, whose many island communities are threatened by frequent forest fires that destroy crops, biodiversity and homes.” Jenisten Antony, Co-Founder, Fireobs

What does the AAU Startup Grant mean for your startup's development right now?

"For Fireobs, the AAU Startup Legat means that we can hire new skills into the team for further development of the communication network that transmits the Fireobs modules' data to the emergency authorities via satellites or masts. In addition, we will also use a share of the money to investigate the possibilities of taking out a patent for the solution" Jenisten Antony, Co-Founder, Fireobs

What made you apply for the AAU Startup Program/ seek out entrepreneurship as graduates?

“We met at HTX, where we studied technology and innovation. During a study trip to the US, Daniel worked with an idea which his knowledge in electronics and technology brought him to think of. Later, we were encouraged by our teachers to participate in a ideas competition in North Jutland. Daniel asked the rest of us if we wanted to run his idea with him. We ended up winning the competition, which gave us an indication that we should continue working on the project. When we all started at university, we applied for the AAU Startup Program and created Fireobs.”

In our startup, we take advantage of the fact that we have very different skills in the team; robotics, economics and marketing. We work on the startup alongside our studies and we have learned a lot from it.

"We have involved some of our associate professors as sparring partners, and in the team we have discussed how far we want to go with the project. Our common ambition is to be able to make a living from Fireobs when we graduate." Jenisten Antony, Co-Founder, Fireobs
