The study programme has changed to Physics and Technology for which you can apply to the following two specialisations:

 

Nanobiotechnology can be used in numerous different contexts such as development of new materials, new technologies or new kinds of medicines. The Master's programme in Nanobiotechnology focuses on designing, fabricating and controlling materials and components with dimensions on the nanoscale, i.e. from 1 to 100 nm. You will gain insight into the possibilities, issues and challenges that engineers within nanobiotechnology are faced with on a day-to-day basis.

Modelling of molecules

When studying the two-year Master’s programme in Nanobiotechnology, you have the opportunity to investigate the fundamental science as well as the contemporary research that make up the field of nanobiotechnology. You have time to immerse yourself in topics you find particularly interesting and you can take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

By constructing materials atom by atom or molecule by molecule, it is possible to obtain decisive control over their properties and develop unique materials with new and unexpected properties for applications within for example (bio)sensors, catalysis or medicine.

The Master's programme in Nanobiotechnology gives you insight into biotechnological research and nanomedicine for diagnosis. You will work with the modelling of molecules, giving you detailed insight into the biochemical processes in proteins and their interactions.

Key subjects in the programme are:

  • gene technology and high throughput systems
  • self-organising systems
  • molecular simulation
  • organic molecules in nanomachines and nanoelectronics

In your semester projects, you and your project group will work with complex and often interdisciplinary issues in relation to nanobiotechnology, that challenge you to use all of your collected knowledge to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to occasionally collaborate with external organisations and businesses in your projects to get an idea of the work processes and current issues in the industry. This will prepare you better for your own work life after you graduate.

This is a full-time study programme, which is characterised by problem based project work in groups. You will be working closely with other students most of the time, and you are required to be present at the university on a daily basis and spend a vast majority of your day there.

You have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including a class 100 clean room with modern equipment for micro and nanoscale fabrication and characterisation as well as a new, fully equipped biochemistry lab including a class 1 area and state-of-the-art biophysical investigation equipment.

Nanobiotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of study, building on knowledge within physics, chemistry, biotechnology, mathematics, and materials science. As an expert within this field of study, you can therefore be invaluable when solving some of the significant future challenges in relation to for example health and environment.

The Master’s programme in Nanobiotechnology entitles you to the designation Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (Nanobiotechnology).

Academic content

During the Master’s programme in Nanobiotechnology you will be introduced to theory, fundamental challenges and contemporary research and technology within this field of study. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in topics you find particularly interesting and combine your theoretical knowledge with practical experiments in the laboratory.

You will work with topics such as:

  • Gene technology
  • Molecular simulations
  • Nanobioengineering
  • Nanobiostructures
  • Chemistry of surfaces
  • Self-assembling systems

The Master's programme in Nanobiotechnology consists of four semesters. The teaching combines lectures, laboratory work and project work. During each of the first two semesters, you will split your time equally between three 5 ECTS courses and one 15 ECTS project. The courses will provide you with the basic knowledge, and the projects will allow you to dig deeper into the matter and focus on particular subjects. The projects are typically done in small groups.

The study programmes at AAU are based on problem based learning and project work, which gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner. You get to apply theory to practice in your semester projects, which will prepare you better for your future career.
