Architecture, MSC in engineering

Do you dream about working with architectural concept development, project development and design of buildings? Master of Science in Engineering (Architecture) at Aalborg University, Denmark, has its focal point in a number of current and future challenges in the field of architecture. With a foundation in subjects, methods, theories and disciplines pertaining to architecture and engineering, the Master of Science in Engineering (Architecture) ensures an interdisciplinary competence profile.

The aim is to design architectural projects with a point of departure in Nordic Architecture. Fields of importance in this regard include tectonic design as well as sustainable architecture. Tectonic design integrates structural, functional and aesthetic parameters whereas sustainable architecture integrates design, aesthetic, technical, functional energy and comfort parameters in an integrated design process shaping high level low energy architecture.

It takes two years to attain a Master of Science in Engineering (Architecture), and during this time you will meet a wide range of teachers who will present you with new knowledge in key areas.

The master’s degree programme is divided into four semesters running respectively from September to January and from February to June (January and June partly reserved for exams). Thus, students will typically complete the programme in two years.

Each semester in Architecture is sub divided into three or four course modules and one project module. All courses are conducted in English.

Job and career

The MSc programme in Architecture combines such skills as creativity, engineering and team work. This combination gives the student the opportunity to influence in which direction he/she wish to head.

Furthermore the education has a close connection and collaboration with companies, institutions etc., which among other things gives the student the opportunity to collaborate with and create close connections to these companies, institutions, etc. This is beneficial for the project work as well as for future carrier opportunities.

With a Master in Engineering Architecture the student will have a well-rounded set of skills. The combination of the architect’s design expertise and the engineer’s professionalism makes our candidates highly qualified to undertake a wide range of positions:

  • Private architectural companies
  • Engineering consultancies
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Research

Student testimonial

M.Sc.Eng in Architecture Louise Nedergaard Clausen was after her studies at Architecture hired as Architectural Assistant at Foster + Partners in London, UK.

There are similarities between the design process at Foster + Partners and the working methods taught at the Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology at Aalborg University. Projects are worked out in teams, with both in-house and external sustainability and construction consultants involved from the earliest stages of a project. This close cooperation throughout the project ensures an integrated design, with a seamless approach to issues of aesthetics and technical solutions.

I am currently working on a mixed-use masterplan in Morocco, which demonstrates this approach. The design process has involved careful consideration of the climate: volume studies, form and structure, orientation and the relationship with its surroundings, as well as balcony depths and glazing positions have been important factors in creating socially responsible buildings that are sensitive to their location and local culture.

My Masters programme at Architecture & Design dealt with similar issues, where architecture and sustainability were parallel driving forces for the design. We were taught to integrate environmental strategies, and to shape the architectural expression according to environmental impacts in a holistic approach to design.

In that sense, my educational background prepared me for working at a practice where environmental awareness is an integral part of every project and the principles of sustainability drive every design.
